The Revival of Amathole Akuthi
Ivanya Yethu aims to boost local tourism and Arts and Culture sectors.
The Foundation has made a positive impact in the lives of over 300 beneficiaries of the rural Eastern Cape. The Amathole Heritage Route project is aimed at reviving heritage sites within the Amathole region of the Eastern Cape. With the support from the National Heritage Council, the foundation has since been able to provide 25 job opportunities with a focus on youth & women of the Amathole District .
“The land of the Eastern Cape does not only take pride in its beautiful landscape but has also seen all walks of life… and this includes its rich history. This heritage route will provide an opportunity for local communities to tell their untold stories in their own way. Ours, with assistance from community leaders, is to help make these heritage site easily accessible”, said Samantha Collett, Ivanya Yethu Heritage Foundation’s co-founder.
As most of these heritage sites are in state(s) of delapidation, Ivanya Yethu Heritage Foundation hopes to revive the sites and make the stories accessible for the general public which will in turn boost the local and international tourism [within the Amathole].
Using sustainable development for rural communities, the foundation hopes to inspire the local communities to instill a sense of pride and awareness to help them become ambassadors of their own heritage.
This project has been funded by the National Heritage Council
